Brief Curriculum Vitae

Nele De Belie (01-08-1970) is professor in Durability of Cement Bound Materials at Ghent University since 2000. She is the head of the “Concrete and Environment” group which consists of about 20 postdoctoral and Ph.D. researchers. She has supervised more than 50 national and international projects in these areas, and has recently coordinated an EC FP7 project on self-healing concrete.

Nele De Belie obtained her Master of Science (1994) and PhD (1997) from Ghent University both with the highest distinction, after which she carried out postdoctoral research at KULeuven (1997-2000), with 6 month research visits to Mt Albert Research Centre New Zealand and KVL University Copenhagen. She obtained the title of Collaborateur Scientifique à l’Unité de Résistance des matériaux et constructions, Gembloux (1997-1999) and has also spent one month at University of Stuttgart to focus on non-destructive testing (2004). She has been expert advisor for “Science and Innovation” of the Flemish Minister of Economy, Enterprise, Science, Innovation and Foreign Trade (2005 – 2009).

Nele De Belie is chair or member of several national and international scientific committees (e.g. within RILEM). She participated in the scientific/organizing committee of more than 50 international conferences and workshops, and was invited or keynote speaker in more than 20 international conferences. She is author of more than 300 publications in scientific journals and conference proceedings (>170 WoS). She is editor of 5 books, author of 16 book chapters and inventor in 3 patent applications. Furthermore, she regularly acts as reviewer for projects and scientific articles (on request of more than 50 different scientific journals) and is editorial board member of 4 scientific journals. Nele De Belie is laureate of different best paper prizes and awards in recognition of her scientific work, such as the RILEM Robert L’Hermite medal 2010 and RILEM fellowship (2015).

A list of publications (1992-now) can be found at http://lib.ugent.be/bibliografie/801000928732.

Research interests related to the TC 281-CCC WG4

Assessing the difference in CH and C–S–H carbonation proportioning and internal H2O production between different accelerated carbonation conditions and natural carbonation for concrete with/without SCMs, and including alkali-activated binders as an extreme case of high-volume SCM addition.

Determining the changes in mineralogy, evolution in microstructure and transport properties as a function of exposure time and carbonation degree under accelerated test conditions for concrete with/without SCMs.

Quantifying the effect of mechanical loads on the carbonation resistance of SCM-containing concretes through the development of standardized test setups for this combined attack mechanism.

Optimizing existing models for carbonation-induced steel depassivation in blended and alkali-activated cement concretes to make them account for all factors mentioned in the previous steps to achieve a more accurate service life prediction.
